The illustration presents the stages of the life cycle of one of the big fish variants, namely the salmon. Overall, it is clearly illustrated that salmons undergo 3 stages of transformation throughout their lives beginning at their egg form until they reach adulthood.
At the start if its life, the salmon egg is laid down on pebbles resting beneath reeds that are found in the slow-flowing waters of the upper parts of the river. The egg stays there for approximately 5-6 months until it hatches to become a fry. During this stage, the fry, already capable of swimming, swim its way towards the faster-flowing lower rivers. Apparently, they grow to about 3-8 cm while inhabiting these banks, which may last to approximately 4 years.
The third stage of the cycle is in the form of the smolt. In this stage, the salmon expands more than double in size to at least 12 cm up to 15 cm in length. They journey from the river banks to the open sea, which marks the start of their adult stage. Towards the end of its life cycle, the adult salmon can grow to a hefty 70-76 cm- long fish. It spends about 5 years of its adult life in the open sea until such time that it is ready to mate and lay its eggs, in which case, it goes back to the upper river, where another life cycle of a salmon commences.
